The
Role and Duty of the Commissioner of Police:
Commissioner of Police is the chief of
Bangalore City Police. He is in command of the entire City Police Force with regard to all
matters of Police functioning. The Commissioner of Police is of the rank of Additional
Director General of Police and he is assisted by two Joint Commissioners of police of the
rank of Inspector General of Police and two Additional Commissioners of Police of the rank
of Deputy Inspector General of Police and 15 Deputy Commissioners of police of the rank of
Superintendents of Police. There are jurisdictional Deputy Commissioners of Police in
charge of specified zones and functional Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of
specilised functions such as Administration, Crime, Security, Intelligence etc.
The Commissioner of Police is also the Foreigner's
Registration Officer.
In his capacity as the District Magistrate he is empowered to act
as the licensing authority in respect of arms licenses and matters concerning public
amusement. He also exercises powers under the Criminal Procedure Code regarding regulation
and prohibition of assembly of persons etc, and detention of persons to prevent breach of
public order under special legislation. He generally reports to Government through the
Director General of Police.

The Role and Duty of the Joint Commissioner of Police:
He is the second in command of
Bangalore City police next in hierarchy to the commissioner. He is in charge of all
matters pertaining to traffic in Bangalore City. He is assisted by the Deputy commissioner
of Police (Traffic). He looks after the traffic management in the city. The Traffic
Training Institute, (TTI), Traffic warden oranisations and activities concerned with SARS
(Student's Association for Road Safety), besides publicity, planning, ambulances, towing
vehicles etc are under the direct charge of the Joint Commissioner. He also coordinates
with the zonal Deputy Commissioner's of Police in the matter of dealing with the
underworld criminals and the welfare of police personnel. He will also assist the
Commissioner of Police in discharge of responsibilities in all police matters in the city.
