Production of documents: A person driving a vehicle -
( i ) Shall always carry with him his driving licence, registration
certificate, tax card, insurance certificate and valid emission test certificate of the
vehicle.
( ii ) Shall on demand by an inspector of the Motor Vehicles in uniform
produce the documents for verification.
Duty of the driver to take certain precautions at
unguarded railway level crossings: (Sec. 131)
Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing
shall cause the vehicle to stop and driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or
cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk upto the level crossing
and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side, and then pilot the
motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant
or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down
from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either
side, before the railway tracks are crossed.
Driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of
drugs: (Sec.185)
Whoever, while driving, or attempting to drive a motor vehicle,
a) has, in his blood, alcohol exceeding 30mg. per 100ml. of blood
detected in a test by a breath analyser, or
b) is under the influence of a drug to such an extent as to be
incapable of exercising proper control over the vehicle, shall be punishable
for the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with
fine which may extend to two thousand rupees, or with both; and for a second or subsequent
offence, if committed within three years of the commission of the previous similar offence
with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine which may
extend to three thousand rupees, or with both.
Explanation : For the purposes of this section, the drug or drugs
specified by the Central Government in this behalf by notification in the Official
Gazette, shall be deemed to render a person incapable of exercising proper control over a
motor vehicle
Duty of a driver in case of accident and injury to a person: (Sec. 134)
When any person is injured or any property of a third party is damaged, as a result of an
accident the driver of the vehicle or other person in charge of the vehicle shall -
a) Take all reasonable steps to secure medical attention for the injured
person and if necessary, convey him to the nearest hospital, or registered medical
practitioner for treatment.
b) Give on demand by a police officer any information required by him,
or, if no police officer is present, report the circumstances of the occurrence, at the
nearest police station as soon as possible, and in any case within twenty-four hours of
the occurrence.
c) Give the following information in writing to the insurer, who has
issued the certificate of insurance about the occurrence of the accident, namely:
i. Insurance policy number and period of its validity,
ii.Date, time and place of accident,
iii.Particulars of the persons injured or killed the accident,
iv.Name of the driver and the particulars of his driving licence. |
Parking and leaving your vehicle:
When parking and leaving your vehicle on a highway or a street, you must stop the engine,
lock the ignition,remove the key, and set the brakes. It is also advisable to raise the
windows and lock the doors
Parallel Parking:
When parking on a two-way roadway you must parallel to and within 12 inches of the curb or
edge of the roadway:
Parking on hill:
When headed downhill you must turn your front wheels towards curb or edge of road. When
headed uphill and there is a car, you must turn your front wheels away from curb and bring
nearside front wheel into contact with curb. When headed uphill and there is no curb, you
must run your front wheels towards edge of highway. It is also wise to leave your vehicle
in gear.
Stopping , Standing , Parking - Prohibited
Shall not stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except
momentarily to pick up or discharge passenger or passengers
In front of a private
driveway except with the consent of the owner or occupant of the premises
Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an
intersection,
Within 30 feet upon the approach to
any flashing signal yield sign, stop sign, or traffic control signal located at the side
of a roadway
Within 20 feet of the driveway or
entrance to any fire station or on the side of a street opposite the entrance to any fire
station within 75 feet of said entrance, when properly sign posted.
At any place an official sign
prohibits standing,
On the roadway side of any vehicle
stopped or parked at the edge or curb of a street or
On a curve or the brow of a hill
where solid lines indicating a no-passing zone appear on the surface of the road.
