Bimal Desai, leading environmentalist, comments on Bangalore

Interview with an Environmentalist :

Q: How would you explain the degeneration of the "Garden City" in recent times?

Ans: 2000 trees have been cut by the City Corporation in the last 3 years without the permission of the forest department. The rule of planting two trees for every one cut is not being complied with.

Q: What role can the Government play in environment protection?
Ans: 8 year old autos and 15 year old lorries should be banned from roads. Catalytic converters should be a must in cars. Unleaded gas should be made the norm.

Q: How can technology help?
Ans: Battery or gas operated vehicles should be used in a big way, like in Delhi, because these are pollution free.

Q: Any suggestions for a greener tomorrow?
Ans: Recycling of paper and banning use of plastic like Shimla City and the Kerala Government have done. Jute can be used as an effective substitute. This way, not only will we make our State green but make other states green with envy.

Q: Which is Bangalore’s most debatable issue concerning the environment?
Ans: To allow vehicles through Cubbon Park or not.
