Bangalore Telecom System is the
fifth largest Telecom System in India after Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta and Chennai serving a
total population of 6.5million spread over an area of 8000 sq.kms.
The status of the Telephone Network as on 1st JULY 2000 is: |

All the switches in
the network are digital. All the major exchanges in the network are interconnected by
highly reliable OPTICAL FIBRE systems, DIGITAL MICROWAVE systems, UHF and cable PCM
systems. All the new technology switches in the network are connected through CCS # 7
Signaling. Bangalore Rural is provided with 100% Electronic Exchanges. All the Exchanges
in Bangalore Rural are provided with STD/ISD/ (Direct Dialing or toll) facilities.
The toll (STD/ISD) services are provided by a large capacity Digital Trunk Automatic
Exchange capable of handling upto one million calls in an hour. This Trunk Automatic
Exchange links nearby towns and villages and all the District Headquarters of Karnataka
State to the National Network. To handle international calls, this switch is directly
connected to the International Gateway Switch of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited at Mumbai
and Chennai. It also acts as a Gateway to Mobile Telephone Network and Paging Network
operated by Service Providers in Bangalore.
Manual trunk calls are handled by a Computerised System.
Telex Service is provided by an Electronic Digital Exchange called EDX. The telex
subscriber can make inland telex calls to about 240 cities in the country. The access to
international telex network is provided via GATEX of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., and to
some of the neighbouring countries via the Zonal centres.
Inet is Indias X.25 based Packet Switched Public Data Network to provide high speed
data connectivity. The Inet node at Bangalore caters to the demand of Bangalore, nearby
towns/villages and other districts of Karnataka. The network has spanned to about 98
Cities in the country and has connectivity to Data Networks abroad. Inet is also connected
to other public Data Networks of Department of Telecommunications - Remote Area Business
Message Network (RABMN) and High speed VSAT network (HVNET). Connectivity is also provided
to Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the ISDN network. |
