Dose were de days
brudder, Bangalore had the same exciting night life that Heaven has.
It was 1976 when I stepped into college for the first class. What was I wearing? 'Fashion
labels' then were stitched on the inside of your shirt collar, and usually read K N Rao or
Wilson Tailors. A few money bags wore Levis jeans.
ABBA and Boney M reigned supreme on Campus. Ragging was about as severe as in a girl's
kindergarten. Though some historic fights did break out in the canteen. (Bangalore was not
yet 'Pub City' but people did become unruly after their third coffee.)
Music was played in the afternoon inside the quadrangle, but it was so old that if your
grandfather asked your grandmother to dance to it, she'd be insulted. (So would T Rex's
grandmother.)
People just 'met' after college, they didn't 'hang out' or 'chill out'. A 'babe' was your
sister's kid and a 'chick' was closer to what 'babe' is today. Hindi movies were most
'Uncool'. You were not supposed to be seen dead in a theatre showing one. Even the movie
actors sent their stunt doubles to attend the grand opening shows.
There were no 'happening' places only 'deadly' ones. One 'chap' not 'dood' went 'up'
Brigade Road on his bike and attained everlasting fame. Now what was his name again
..........
Many years later I walk in ........ The old college building has been cloned into other
identical structures. (In some countries the Old Block would have sued the New Blocks.)
The year was 1999 and I was back at Christ to take a class on advertising creativity for a
bunch of gum chewing, bored-looking students.
Yeah ....... they're right ........... the more things change, the more they remain the
same.
